What Should I Do if My Pipes Freeze?

Minnesota winters can be brutal in so many ways, and just keeping yourself warm as you go about your daily business can be enough of a challenge for the average homeowner. You definitely don’t want to deal with a plumbing disaster and thousands of dollars in repair bills because of a burst pipe.

That’s the danger when pipes freeze, though, and the piping in attics, basements, crawl spaces, and garages is especially vulnerable this time of year. It’s important to stay on the lookout for the warning signs of a frozen pipe and to act quickly if you spot a potential problem.

If you suspect a pipe (or pipes) has frozen in your home, you have two immediate choices: try and thaw the pipe yourself or call a professional for help.

If you’re going to take a crack at it, first, shut off the water supply to either that particular section of the home, if possible. Be prepared with buckets and towels in case leakage occurs once the frozen pipe thaws and cracks in the pipe are exposed. Also, open the faucets attached to that area of the plumbing system, to give thawed water a place to go.

You can then apply heat to the frozen area using a hair dryer, space heater, electrical heating tape, a heat lamp, or even hot towels. Just make sure NEVER to use an open flame.

Keep applying heat until whatever water was frozen in the pipe begins to flow out. Once you restore the water supply, everything within the system should be flowing smoothly. However, thawing a frozen pipe can also reveal cracks or leaks that need to be repaired immediately.
